Factors to Consider for Site Logistics in Project Execution

The work conditions and logistics of a job site play a crucial role in the preparation of a Project Logistics tender and timely execution of the project. It is important to evaluate the site carefully and identify any potential risks, taking necessary mitigating actions to reduce them.

The site evaluation must include a definition of site perimeters, access difficulties due to location, ground and soil conditions, permits, right of ways, health and safety, and security.

Site access and availability conditions should be evaluated carefully, with clearly defined responsibilities for the customer and contractor during the tender phase. The customer must guarantee unrestricted access to and use of the site, including access roads and right of ways. The responsibility for obtaining any required permits and right of ways must be clearly defined.

Sub-soil risks are not the responsibility of the logistics company, unless specifically taken under the main contractor’s responsibility. In such cases, ground conditions must be investigated prior to bid submission as they can impact operations and costs if transport or lifting operations cannot proceed as planned.

Soil investigations

Site logistics infrastructure, including fencing, utilities, storage, security, health and safety, must be defined and evaluated. Site activities, including quality assurance and quantity control, should be planned and documented, and shared through a Project Freight Management online tool.

The logistics company should explicitly exclude responsibility for any hazardous or toxic waste at the site related to transport and logistics, as much as possible taking into consideration local laws.

The availability of electricity, cooling media, loading, and other requirements for delivered equipment and logistics solutions should also be considered and evaluated.
